Self-Assessment:
The class overall was a really interesting class. It taught me a lot of the basic principles of humanities. The class was well taught and the lectures were really interesting but there wasn’t enough time to cover all the topics in one class which requires us to go home and review the slides which I don’t mind.
Honestly, I don’t think I did too well in the class because of my procrastination. It’s a habit that I need to kick out. The habit has been around for as long as I’ve known it, starting way before high school. I can’t seem to wrap my mind around what I currently do. In one of the assignments it explains about how there are a whole bunch of distractions in today’s society. I could find this to be evident extremely. There are so many distractions to me even if I try to concentrate. I tried what everyone recommended which was to go to a public café to work on stuff however it didn’t really work out either because I needed internet. The internet is just a gateway to more distractions along with my surroundings. It would take me an hour or more or less just to finish one assignment for any class because my mind gets easily distracted. Overall, I would consider my performance not to be that good because of the procrastination and distracted mind.
The at home assignments were my trouble point along with my procrastination. With the long tedious articles, it was hard to concentrate on the articles. The articles would require me to access the internet but as soon as I do so, I would get distracted. I tried printing the articles out but they were still extremely long and tedious to read. Some of the articles were interesting but some were just not relatable at all. I tried to do as many blogs as possible using the opinion based one more because they would appeal to me than the ones that require a lot of reading. Hopefully I still do well in the class.
The things I learned in the course are what humans do naturally without a thought. I never thought there were so many things that we never think twice about doing. Like all the dance and music depth we went into would stick with me. The most interesting one was the norm we consider. I was able to stand backwards in an elevator and get reactions from some people because it wasn’t normal to stand to the back of the elevator for some reason. It’s just these habits that we involuntarily do. Also, I learned about the vast culture the world contains and how the livings styles of everyone from different regions of the world vary greatly. Along with mass media changing what’s in and what’s not.
In participating in this course, I could use the knowledge gain to observe life in a different perspective. When I walk down the street now, I observe the actions people do involuntarily because they think it’s the norm. We don’t get taught these lessons but we naturally pick them up because of what other people do around us. I would now observe and know why they do this and what mindset they have doing something as they are doing it. Music changed for me too. When I listen to music, I think of the different characteristics they have. The play project was an interesting subject too because it allowed me to observe a certain area for the time being and see what people do. With this, I might just go to a café and observe what people do in the area just for fun. L
Overall, I really enjoyed the class. It changed my view on how to view the world, similar to time when I took psychology. Now that I think about it, this class seems to have some characteristics of a psych class which I enjoyed very much.
