E-Reserves 1b: Animated Version of Ken Robinson

(RSA Animate – Changing Education Paradigms)

The video on a whole was interesting and having what Robinson was trying to convey really helped me understand the meaning behind his words. It really does seem obscure to have students determine their intellect with such a way as standardized test, which are designed to only slightly determine how someone smart someone is according to their standards. What would be a more effective way would be to have a test that would determine their intellect individually. The way he describes the education system would be like a like a factory line, by such a way separate subjects to kids in batches. In turn, this method kills their divergent thinking because of the way how we viewed a problem would only have one answer (in the back of the book.) I believe an effective way to know someone’s true intellectual potential would be having a method to allow divergent thinking and creativity. I agree with what Robinson has to say on how education is based, that we have to think differently of the human capacity. His ideas on how to reshape education are great and should be experimented with to test the true potential of learning.

My question that never was answered is:

Why don’t we have education at a young split into their own groups according on their will to learn rather than age?

My favorite game at the moment would be a video game called League of Legends. The game would fit in both the agon category and the mimicry category for the type of game it is. The purpose of the game would be to become the role of the character and fight against opposing characters to see who triumphs. It is considered a game because it takes your mind off the real world and places you into a fantasy world. In LoL (League of Legends) they compete for a similar goal and each player takes up a character unlike the rest. The game also moves the player outside of reality to things they wouldn’t be able to do in reality itself. This allows them to relax to become something that they’re not thus taking up mimicry. The agon part comes in because your actions control the outcome of the game. So, in the game you are faced with another player which is your opponent which you have to face. If you make a wrong move, it could lead to you losing.

Would you consider this to be a type of game?

The last painting I went to a museum to observe was Piet Mondrian’s Composition (No. III) Blanc-Jaune / Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue in San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art. This art piece doesn’t really appeal to me in any way. I don’t find this really artistic in any sense other than its attempt stab at Minimalism. It just has parallel lines with perpendicular lines going through the sides with different colors for squares. It doesn’t really have a focal point either, having the viewer’s eyes just drift over the piece. However, it does convey a meaning of simplicity. Not all art has to have a bunch of paint for it to be consider a painting, but this one seems to have the right amount.

What is your opinion on this oil on canvas artwork?

Currently my favorite type of monument or architectural building would have to be the Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is a temple that was built for king Suryavarman II. It is built with a sort of vernacular architecture since most of the material came from Mount Kulen, a quarry about 25 miles northeast. The design was based off a temple and early South Indian Hindu architecture. However, this was considered to be a classical style Khmer architecture and became a national symbol. It followed the ideas of Buddhism with Buddha figures covering the walls of the temple. This was because the current mainstream religion at that time was Buddhism but after Suryavarman’s rule, Hinduism became the main religion which led to the destruction of some sculptures in the temple.

The two dialects that I heard would be Cantonese and Mandarin in the Chinese language. The meaning is a way to communicate depending on where you come from in China or Hong Kong. They’re both widely used depending what region you’re in. In Southern China, you would be prone to hearing more Cantonese and other Chinese dialects then if you were in the middle area of China. However, China adopted Mandarin as their main dialect of Chinese so it would be a globally used dialect of Chinese. Mandarin is used more for business transaction throughout the country more than the laidback Cantonese. The major Chinese cities have different accents of Mandarin depending on the region or city the speaker is from. From this, you could tell where they’re from.
